200% Increase in Emergency Visits for Asthma During the Month of September1

Already the most common respiratory disease in Canadian children, asthma is responsible for one-quarter of school absenteeism, and is the leading cause of hospitalizations of children up to the age of 14.2

September epidemics of asthma hospitalizations have a precise relationship with the return of children to school. With the commencement of school, children are exposed to more viral respiratory tract infections, often introducing these infections to other members of their family.

The result is in an increase in poorly controlled asthma and double the emergency room visits, compared to the month of August.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?
All patients demonstrate better inhalation technique when using a pressurized Metered Dose Inhaler (pMDI) and Valved Holding Chamber (VHC). When combined with a Valved Holding Chamber, patient’s inhaler competency increases 100%.3

Discuss the September Spike phenomenon with your asthma patients and take the opportunity to review their individualized asthma action plan. For those patients using pMDI formulations, prescribe an AeroChamber MAX® Anti-Static VHC and ensure that patients have one at home and at school.

The AeroChamber MAX® VHC is available in a full line of chambers that have been anatomically designed to suit all ages, including specially designed valves that offer low resistance for paediatric patients. With unique features like the proprietary Flow-Vu® Inspiratory Flow Indicator (IFI), the AeroChamber MAX® VHC eliminates the guesswork associated with aerosol drug delivery, allowing caregivers and patients to easily coordinate actuation with inhalation.

AeroChamber MAX® VHC helps to deliver aerosol medication where it is needed – deep into the lungs!
The AeroChamber MAX® VHCs are covered by private, provincial* and federal insurance plans.
*Excluding BC, PEI, ON
